Data Science Assessment Day
What to expect when you meet us
Congratulations!
Congratulations for getting this far in the recruitment process for our Data Science Lead role. We wanted to give you an outline of what to expect on the day.
What will happen on the day?
-
We'll meet some people
One of the big reasons for the assessment day is to introduce you to some of the people you'll be working with day in, day out. It's a relaxed environment so you'll be able to ask lots of questions to get a fuller idea of the role and the Company.
-
We'll talk about how you might fit into the team
We're going to set you a scenario to think about in advance (a bit further down the page), we'll invite you to talk us through your thoughts on the day. No Powerpoints!
-
We'll have a face-to-face interview
So we can get to know you a bit more. We'll also ask you a bit about your technical know-how, but no tests!
The Scenario
Ahead of meeting us, we'd like you to think about the following scenario. On the day, we'll have a chat about your thoughts, and how you might approach this situation.
Widgets Inc., a leading manufacturer of high-tech widgets, has been experiencing a decline in sales for the past two years. The reasons for this decline are currently ambiguous, with potential culprits ranging from changes in market demand, increasing competition, outdated product features, or shifts in consumer behaviour. The executive team believes that through proper data analysis, they can uncover specific reasons behind the sales decline.
While specific datasets are not available, the company is known to have historical sales records, customer feedback, details of marketing campaigns, and various economic indicators from different regions.
Your Task:
Given this context, you are tasked with the following:
1. Data Strategy Formulation:
- Enumerate what kind of data might be relevant to this problem.
- Suggest potential analytical approaches to uncover the underlying issues causing the decline in sales.
2. Analysis Proposal:
- Describe the analytical techniques or methodologies you'd employ.
- Share how these methods might help reveal patterns or trends.
3. Team Collaboration and Management:
- As the manager, how would you structure your team to tackle this problem?
- How would you allocate responsibilities based on a hypothetical team composition? (E.g., Data Engineers, Data Analysts, Machine Learning Engineers, etc.)
- Discuss any anticipated challenges in the data analysis process and how you'd prepare your team to address them.
4. Stakeholder Engagement:
- Describe your strategy for communicating interim findings, updates, and results to non-technical stakeholders.
- How would you ensure that your team's work aligns with business objectives and priorities?
5. Implementation and Action:
- Based on your analysis proposal, provide hypothetical strategic recommendations to halt or reverse the decline in sales.
- Discuss potential pitfalls in the implementation of these strategies and how they can be addressed.
Guidelines:
- Although no data is provided, you can craft hypothetical outcomes or insights based on logical assumptions to illustrate your points.
- Aim to make your findings engaging for a non-technical audience but be prepared for technical questions.
We don't expect you to create a presentation or present your findings back to us, we will have a conversation with you about this on the day.
